Lysodren is used to help animals who suffer from pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism). This disorder results in the adrenal gland producing excess hormone and Lysodren helps to normalize hormone levels and control associated symptoms. What is Lysodren? This is an oral tablet that treats pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism). It can also be used to treat some of the symptoms associated with adrenal gland tumors. Give exactly according to your veterinarians instructions. It is usually recommended to give this medication with a high fat treat or food to help increase absorption. Your veterinarian will usually start your pet on a high dose at first and then gradually decrease the dose to the minimum dose to be effective. Your veterinarian will monitor your pet closely to make sure he/she is on the correct dose of medication. With Cushing's disease and some types of tumors, excess steroid hormone is produced. Lysodren helps the adrenal gland to produce less steroid hormone so levels can return to normal. If Lysodren is helping, it is usually used chronically for the rest of your pets life. What form(s) does Lysodren come in? Tablets. Lysodren is usually given with a high fat treat or some high fat food to increase absorption. Your veterinarian will monitor your pet and blood work properly to make sure they are on the proper dose of medication. If you forget to give a dose of medication, give it as soon as you remember but never double dose. Give this medication only to the pet it has been prescribed for. Possible Side Effects: Lethargy, weakness, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, depression, and liver damage are possible. Your pets appetite, water intake, and urination should decrease when Lysodren starts to work. Some pets may be truly allergic to this medication. Other side effects are possible. Call your veterinarian if your pet is acting ill while taking Lysodren. Drug and Food Interactions: Tell your veterinarian about all other medications and supplements your pet is taking. Interactions may occur with prednisone, prednisolone, barbiturates, warfarin, phenobarbital, or spironolactone, CNS depressants, and insulin. Other drug interactions are possible. Precautions: Do not give Lysodren to animals who are allergic to it or similar medications. Pregnant or nursing females should not be given this medication. Pregnant women should not handle this medication. Caution should be used when giving Lysodren animals with liver or kidney disease. Storage: Store at room temperature away from children and pets.
